YouTube is to launch a paid-for service for users who want to view videos without pre-roll advertising and banners. The Google-owned firm has sent an email to content creators saying that they must agree to participate or have their videos set to private.
It comes after the company launched music streaming service Music Key and an app for children called YouTube Kids.
The YouTube email read: "We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favour of choice: offering fans an ad-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee.
"By creating a new paid offering, we'll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast-growing advertising revenue."
Some technology websites have speculated that the monthly fee will be less than £10 each month, with 55% of the revenue going to video creators and YouTube keeping the remainder.
The service is likely to be available sometime this year.
The site has around one billion users every month but struggles to make any profit.
YouTube's share of streaming traffic has been falling in recent years with the rise of websites like Netflix - with a share of 14% in 2014 compared to 19% in 2013.
