Elder statesman and former federal commissioner for information, Chief Edwin Clark, has condemned in strong terms the presentation of a “Certificate of Commendation” by the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, to Professor Attahiru Jega, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman.
Professor Attahiru Jega is receiving “Certificate of Commendation”
Speaking to journalists on April 7, 2015 in Abuja, Chief Clark stressed that the award for conducting the presidential and National Assembly elections was too hasty as Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls yet to be held.
According to Vanguard, Clark urged the US to leave Nigeria alone, stressing that Nigeria remains an independent country capable of doing things in its own way, not according to the dictates of the western world.
“I was surprised that Barack Obama gave Professor Attahiru Jega an award when the elections are still on. Obama should be tactful in handling the affairs of Africa. US should leave us alone, Nigeria is an Independent country. They tried it Egypt, they should not try anything in Nigeria,” he said.
It would be recalled that James Entwistle, the US Ambassador to Nigeria presented the “Certificate of Commendation” to Jega for his outstanding and faultless performance during the elections.
Meanwile, the INEC boss has recently announced that he is not interested in tenure renewal and will not accept an offer of extension.
