Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state has narrowly escaped death after alleged PDP thugs fired gunshots at him.
According to The Nation, the attempt at Amaechi’s life occurred this evening, March 26, in Port Harcourt, the state capital...The attack has been confirmed by David Iyofor, the chief press secretary to the Rivers governor, who in a text message at 7:33 p.m said: This Thursday evening, gunshots were fired at the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, in Rumuolumeni (Port Harcourt), Obio/Akpor LGA (of Rivers State) by PDP thugs. Obio/Akpor LGA is the home of PDP Rivers governorship candidate, Nyesom Wike (an indigene of Rumueprikom).
David Iyofor added that:“The thugs attacked the governor and his entourage with bottles, stones and various dangerous objects. Then, gunshots were fired at the governor.
“For now, two APC supporters are confirmed injured and bloodied. When the governor was leaving the community, bonfire was set up on the road to prevent him from leaving. More gunshots were fired at his convoy. Governor Amaechi was on a door-to-door ward campaign in the state.”
The Rivers state Police command has however declined to comment on the issue, saying it is yet be briefed over the alleged attack on Rotimi Amaechi.
The alleged attack on the Rivers state governor comes hours after the two leading candidates in Saturday’s presidential election, President Jonathan of the PDP and Mohammadu Buhari of the APC, signed another peace accord in Abuja.
