Bill Novak and Norman MacArthur were dating for 50 years, 15 of which they positioned themselves as a father and a son.
Of course, they are not biologically related, but as at the time of their romance, Pennsylvania did not approve same sex marriage and they had to register their relationship as adoption – an approach commonly used among same-sex couples.
Norman, who adopted MacArthur in 2000, said: “The time came about to do estate planning. We were told at that time ‘hell would freeze over before Pennsylvania approves same sex marriage.'” Since then both dreamed of being married. Fifteen years later their dream came true, a U.S. District Court declared Pennsylvania’s prohibition on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.
The couple immeditaely canceled the adoption and applied for a marriage license the same day, they will officially get married this summer. Speaking to journalists Novak and MacArthur said, “We are ecstatic beyond relief. I feel an enormous sense of not only relief but freedom that we can finally do something in Pennsylvania that I’ve been dreaming of for years.”
