Nigeria- The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to investigate and prosecute individuals known as GHOST WORKERS in country.
In simple definitions, Ghost workers describe some set of individuals who for one reason or other dont work in organisation or government body but are being paid like the regularly workers because their names are on the payroll of that organisation or government body.
The development was confirmed by the Media Adviser to the Minister of Finance, Mr Akanbi Festus after issuing out the names of those involved to EFCC.
Mr Akanbi speaking to The Punch said :
The ministry has sent the list of individuals involved in the dubious act are handed over to EFCC and EFCC are the ones investigating the matters.
Sources gathered that some ghost workers have been arrested and arraigned to court by anti-graft agency.
The punch also revealed that the prosecution is being delayed because the court is currently on recess.
AGF, Dikwa had said, “The Continuous Audit Team plans to conduct regular checks on the control and risk assessment of MDA. We look at records that are being kept to ensure transparency and accountability of the financial transactions carried over time.
“In terms of ‘ghost’ workers, we have found about 43,000 ghost workers so far and as of May 30, we had N4.2bn that is saved on a monthly basis. As of June 30, we were able to make more recoveries of N2.2bn, which has led to an additional savings of N6.4bn monthly.”
